Early Music Class
Mostly Music from the Renaissance
La Mer Consort Recorders Plus

La Mer Consort is an amateur recorder group which has been performing in the South Bay for over 40 years. Participant level is intermediate/advanced but beginners who can read music can be accommodated. Join us to enjoy music through the ages with an emphasis on Renaissance/Baroque music. The La Mer Consort Recorders Plus Class is now meeting at the Manhattan Beach Art Center. The Winter session runs from January 11 through March 15. Classes meet Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 9:00. Technique and beginners from 6:30 pm to 7 pm. This session, we will be performing in March at Trinity Lutheran in Manhattan Beach. The class is primarily for recorders, but we welcome other early music instruments (such as flute, violin, cornetto, crumhorn, sackbut or percussion) and voice to add variety to our performances. Occasionally, we demonstrate Renaissance dance as well. The ADVANCED CLASS will also meet on MONDAY evenings 6:45-7:45.

The ADVANCED CLASS will work on 4 remaining DUOS on Alto Recorders by deFesch.
We will also work on a volume of DUOS from the Renaissance (bring your Thumb drive – I will copy this larger volume on it and you can copy it at home

Class A—Intermediate. 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM
Class B—Advanced. 3:45 PM to 5:15 PM

Location: St. Bede’s Episcopal Church, 3590 Grand View Blvd., West Los Angeles.(Two blocks west of the 405 freeway and one block north of Venice Blvd. at the corner of Grand View and Charnock.) Plenty of free parking.

Tuition: $180 for one class and $280 for both classes (a discount of $80 if you take both!) Printed music will cost $6 for each class.

Il Piffaro de Sade

Tom Axworthy’s IL PIFFARO DE SADE continues regularly on every Thursday night. Players are welcome to come and play to see if they would like to join. All folks playing historic winds are welcome: recorders, flutes, crumhorns, sackbuts, cornetti, shawms, dulcians, etc. You might give Tom a quick call (562/773-2265) to let him know you would like to stop by.

A special class for “wind band” instruments: shawms, dulcians, rancketts, sackbutts, cornetti, crumhorns, percussion & Recorders We will work our way through techniques of playing your instruments as well as the great dance and consort music appropriate to our instruments. DATES: Thursday evenings, 7:45-9:45 pm. You are invited to begin with us on any Thursday of any month.

FEES: The fee will depend on the number of students in the class. Please contact Tom Axworthy about joining the class. The Village Pipers Recorder Ensemble

This is is an adult intermediate-level recorder group that meets 1:30–3:00 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays to practice at Claremont Community School of Music, 951 West Foothill Blvd., Claremont 91711. Our repertoire includes Renaissance, Baroque, and folk music. Tuition is $150 for twenty sessions. We do occasional gigs year round. Contact Sandra Parker at (909) 624-3012 for more information.

Private instruction

We are compiling a list of recorder or gamba teachers in Orange and Los Angeles counties who provide private instruction to individuals or groups. If you know or are such a teacher contact the webmaster so we can list you here as a service to our members. Include a short paragraph describing what you teach.
